TOP 10 WHISPERS OF 2012

Slide1

Another year has come and gone here at the the Whispers on the Streets. It’s hard to believe we have been at this for 4 years now. It’s been a great ride and we hope that 2013 is another fun journey filled with the best local music, events, food, art, fashion, & sport. With that said, we leave you with our Top 10 Whispers for 2012 (in no particular order). Full list after the jump ——>;

TEAM OF THE YEAR: MIAMI HEAT

No team gelled a community together as much as the 2011-12 Miami Heat. The “Miami against the World” attitude of the team brought people from all over the 305 together to cheer on Lebron to his first championship. The atmosphere can best be defined by this video from local cuban restaurant La Carreta’s celebration.

BAR OF THE YEAR: FOXHOLE

This “Speak-Easy” bar has had a hell of a 1st year on this highly competitive SoBe Nightlife scene. A who’s who of local and national celebrities have all been seen sipping cocktails in this casual no-hassle sports lounge tucked in an alley behind a Dominoes pizza. Even Jay & B made an appearance this past month during Basel. Besides the throwback music, chill atmosphere, the Cheeseburger baby buffet on football Sundays & stiff drinks, Foxhole delivers with the a stockpile of attractive bartenders. Shout out to Tonya, Marissa, Jackie, Sam, Leslie & the Kellys. I’ll see you ladies in 2013! Honorable Mentions: Wood Tavern, The Broken Shaker.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.D.D. city

FIVE MICS…nuff said! #KINGKENDRICK
Honorable Mentions: Nas – Life is Good, Frank Ocean – Channel Orange

EVENT OF THE YEAR: ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH & MIAMI ART WEEK
Year in and year out, the Art Basel Miami Beach and the satellite Miami Art Week events gain the world’s attention and focus to the South Florida art & design scene. No other event in Miami has single handedly changed the cultural landscape and urban re-development like the world’s premier art event. Previously dilapidated and undeveloped warehouse districts like Wynnwood, Midtown & Design district have all grown in exponentially in the 11 years since Art Basel made it’s debut. The “art renaissance” has swept the city and continues to deliver something a little more than just sunshine & night life that have been the calling card of South Florida for so many years. Art Basel has given culture to the world and given Miami it’s own place in the scene. Honorable Mentions: Miami International Film Festival, SOBE Wine & Food Festival

BAND OF THE YEAR: PROBLEM KIDS
When a couple local Miami musicians from different genres, a DJ and two hip-hop lyricists join forces to create music the byproduct is a beautiful blend of Hip Hop, Jazz, RnB, Reggae, Alt Rock and a splash of Latin Funk. The Problem Kids have produced all year long; Non-stop shows every month, releasing countless freestyles, radio show visits, and finishing their first studio album: Poetry In Motion. 2012 has been good to this crew. Watch out for more of that “Feel Good” in 2013.

RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR: LOKALBURGER & BEERS

The Lokal Burger & Beers restaurant opened this past year (Dec 2011) in Coconut Grove with its aim to provide a local (& organic) twist on classic american food. The chefs source everything from the meat to the beers from local Florida producers. The signature “Frita Burger” takes a burger and gives it a cuban inspired guava paste and potato stick top. The “Childhood Dream” burger takes a Bacon Cheeseburger and places it between a glazed doughnut. Other must-tries are the Mama Bear’s Chicken & Waffles and Miami’s own Blond Ale Draft Beer. Honorable Mention: Yardbird Southern Table, GIGI

BEST PARTY: PEACHFUZZ @ THE GARRETT
The only real hip hop party that plays the classics & new joints without going out on a Sunday night or getting bottle service at the mega club. Every Friday in downtown, the Garrett gives you a hip-hop party with no cover, no tables and no BS. NAS was wrong…Hip Hop lives…Downtown.
Honorable Mention – BARDOT(Thurs-Sun), MOKAI Monday’s

BEST SPORTING EVENT: ING MIAMI MARATHON

2012’s edition of the ING MIAMI MARATHON was it’s 10th and largest race to date. The marathon, which starts and finishes in downtown Miami, took 25,000+ participants from American Airlines Arena to Ocean Drive through Coconut Grove, back to Brickel and finishing at Bayside in a 26.2 mile loop of the Magic city. This year’s race kicks off Miami’s Madness in late January. Honorable Mentions: UM Bball over FSU, Marlin’s Opening Day.

BEST SHOE: AIR YEEZY 2
Kanye’s limited edition NIKE signature shoe was the most sought after shoe in the world. Let’s see what his baby will be rocking later this year. Honorable Mention: Cole Haan LunarGrand

BEST MUSIC SHOW: ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL

When you think of Miami nightlife, house/electronic music has always been a large part of that. For the last 14 years, the ULTRA MUSIC Festival has been the anchor of the electronic dance music (EDC) craze world wide and Miami has been the doorway to the previously untapped US market. The 2012 edition stretched over 3 days in March during Miami’s busiest tourist season. A record 165,000 people poured into downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park to witness the greatest production in the event’s history. This year the event will stretch yet again and take place over two separate weekends. EDC has official arrived. Honorable Mentions: Rakim @ the Stage, A$AP Rocky @ the Delano, LIV (Every Weekend).
